Spills can be even more difficult on flowing surface water, which spreads the spill material more rapidly over greater distances. Each hydrocarbon-spill incident affects the environment uniquely; however, spills around waterways are much worse, because spill material can easily mix with water, which carries the hydrocarbon-contaminated material to wherever that waterway goes.
